The loom is in fashion

During the last 20 years, at Eleni Kouidi’s weaving workshop at Rethymno, Crete, the wooden hand looms give their own rhythm to the neighborhood, while keeping the art of loom weaving alive, despite the changing times. The creation of the traditional Cretan rugs, was not just a means of supporting the family but also an act of promoting culture. Everything changed when Eleni’s daughter, Antonia Stathaki decided to follow her mother’s occupation and to modernize her creations. The story of LoomHandmade is proof of the power of cultural entrepreneurship and shows that there is fertile ground for innovation, creativity and extroversion for anyone who wishes to create a brand based on the Greek cultural heritage.
Invigorating tradition

Invigorating tradition

While respecting tradition, mother and daughter create today contemporary bags woven on the loom, thus invigorating a piece of history and tradition that is in danger of extinction. LoomHandmade creations have ancient Greek names such as Kirki, Penelope, Atropos and Estia, and have been awarded at the competitions “Best Brand Awards” and “Wave”. Loom products begin their journey from the Minoan city of Lappa (modern Argyroupolis) and travel to Cyclades, Europe, Canada and Australia through their e-shop.
Promoting our cultural wealth

Promoting our cultural wealth

«I feel proud that I have managed to link the ancient heritage with modern branding – something that we witness more often – and for being able to promote the cultural wealth of my country, both in Greece and abroad. Despite the fact that we took a big risk, as for many people the loom belongs at the museums, it proved to be a wise entrepreneurial move. ».
