Contemporary Minoans: In Crete for the first time, renowned Greek designers inspired by and globally promoting the Minoan civilisation
The Cultural Organisation Branding Heritage (BH) coorganises a cultural 2-day event with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the Region of Crete in the frame of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, entitled “Contemporary Minoans”, with the aim to showcase the everlasting influence and wide representation of the Minoan civilisation on the global conptemporary design and creation. The events are held on 11-12 May 2018 at Knossos and Heraklion in Crete, under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO).
Revival of the Minoan gastronomy at the garden of the Knossos Research Center
The first (closed) event (11 May) is dedicated to the revival of the Minoan gastronomy and will be hosted at the premises of the Knossos Research Center of the British School at Athens. The event “Cooking like Minoans” includes a meal inspired by the Minoan diet, to be prepared by archaeologist and founder of Minoan Tastes Dr. Jerolyn Morrison and a guided tour by Director of the British School at Athens Professor John Bennet and Knossos Curator Dr. Kostis Christakis.
Open Cultural Dialogue, Honorary Distinction, Workshops of Ancient Techniques & Exhibition of contemporary creations with Minoan references
During the second day (12 May), the Heraklion Archaeological Museum welcomes Branding Heritage and renowned Greek creators that honour their ancient Greek heritage, at an open cultural dialogue under the theme “Minoan civilisation inspires contemporary creators”. In the frame of the event, the Region of Crete and the Cultural Organisation Branding Heritage honour the internationally renowned Greek designer Sophia Kokosalaki for her contribution to the promotion of the Greek heritage and, especially her Cretan origin and Minoan influence, as a source of inspiration and creativity in world fashion scene. The honorary distinction will be awarded by the founder of Branding Heritage, journalist Katerina Frentzou and the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis. A Minoan creation, especially made by prominent Greek ceramist Dimitris Z. Stathopoulos, will be offered.
Distinguished Geek creators, archaeologists and journalists participate as speakers, among which: Yannis Tseklenis (Designer, BH Expert), Christina Martini (Ancient Greek Sandals), Mareva Grabowski, Dimitra Kolotoura (Zeus & Dione), Georges Papalexis (Zolotas House of Jewels), Polina Sapouna-Ellis (Archaeologist, Jewellery Designer), Faye Chatzi (Fashion Designer), Elis Kiss (“K” magazine, newspaper Kathimerini), Nikos Koutsianas (APIVITA), Dr. Effie Sapouna-Sakellarakis (Honorary Director of Antiquities, BH Expert), Dr. Bernice Jones (Archaeologist, Art historian), Nota Dimopoulou (Archaeologist, Honorary Director of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum), Dr. Stella Spantidaki (Archaeologist, President of the Hellenic Centre for Research and Conservation of Archaeological Textiles ARTEX, BH Expert), Chrysovalantis Gialesakis (Heraklion Silver Goldsmiths Association), Maria Stratinaki (Institute of Vocational Training Rethymno), Doukeni Papafloratou and George Vourakis (2nd Heraklion Laboratory Center and 5th Heraklion Vocational Upper Secondary School). The event is moderated by Olga Stavropoulou (Militos Consulting S.A. & S.E. knowl). Illustrations for the visual identity of the event have been offered by renowned Greek illustrator Christos Kourtoglou.
During the event, opening addresses will be delivered by the Director of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum Dr. Stella Mandalaki, the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sports Dr. Maria Vlazaki, the Vice-Mayor for Culture of Heraklion Crete Aristea Plevri, former Vice-President of the European Parliament Rodi Kratsa and founder of Branding Heritage, journalist Katerina Frentzou.
In the frame of the event, workshops of ancient techniques will be presented (loom: Alexandra Theohari, Klotho, jewellery: thread: Faye Chatzi, fashion designer, Voula Karampatzaki, artist, jewellery designer) while original contemporary creations with Minoan references will be exhibited at the Museum by brands Sophia Kokosalaki, Mary Katrantzou, Ancient Greek Sandals, Spyridon Tsagarakis, ZEUS & DIONE, Polina Sapouna Ellis, Croquis by Qupa, Faye Chatzi, Bernice R. Jones, Philomela, Klotho, Xenia Nefelly Vlachou - Marmarometry, Voula Karampatzaki, Anna Kitsou Ceramic Jewellery, Anaktae.
